Cooling Tower Basin Filtration Systems
Industrial water filtration system for process water and wastewater treatment

Reduce suspended solids. Protect cooling equipment. Simplify maintenance.

Dirt, sediment, algae, and slime collect in cooling tower basins and circulate through pumps, piping, and heat exchangers. Yardney RCW Recirculating Water Filtration Systems are skid-mounted, fully assembled systems that filter suspended solids from recycled cooling tower water.

• Skid-mounted and fully assembled

• Flows from 10 gpm

• Backwash cleaning

• Serving industry since 1965

Why Cooling Tower Basins Need Filtration

Open cooling towers are exposed to airborne dust, dirt, and debris. Along with particles carried in by makeup water and system operation, these solids settle in the basin or circulate through pumps, piping, and heat exchangers, where they reduce heat transfer and add to maintenance.

In industrial plants, that means condensers, plate-and-frame exchangers, and process cooling loops. In hotels, campuses, and commercial buildings, it means condensers and HVAC components. Filtration removes suspended solids before they reach that equipment.

Benefits

  • Reduce Sediment Accumulation: Capture suspended particles that would otherwise settle in the basin and add to recurring cleanouts.
  • Protect Heat Transfer Surfaces: Reduce the particulate load reaching heat exchangers and condensers to help limit solids-related fouling.
  • Help Maintain Flow: Reduce debris that can restrict flow through pumps, piping, and heat exchanger passages.
  • Support More Predictable Maintenance: Backwash and purge cycles make solids removal part of routine operation instead of relying only on periodic basin cleaning.

Yardney RCW Recirculating Water Filtration Systems

Yardney RCW systems are skid-mounted, fully assembled filtration systems for recycled cooling tower water and industrial process water. They remove organic contaminants such as algae and slime, and inorganic contaminants such as sand, rock, and grit.

Each system is built around one filtration technology: sand media, centrifugal sand separator, Maxi Flush screen, or Filtaworx. The right choice depends on your flow, the solids in your water, and your installation conditions. Flows start at 10 gpm, and standard operating pressure is 80 psi, with high-pressure versions available.

Cooling Tower Filtration Process

  • Water from the basin or recirculating loop is routed into the filtration system.
  • The selected technology captures or separates suspended solids.
  • Filtered water returns to the cooling system.
  • Media and screen filters release captured solids by backwash; separators release them through a purge.

Mechanical filtration removes suspended particles. It does not remove dissolved salts or replace treatment for corrosion, scale, and microbiological growth. Coordinate filtration with your cooling water treatment program.

Filtration Technology Options

  • Sand Media: organic and inorganic suspended solids down to 20 microns; backwash runs one tank at a time
  • Centrifugal Sand Separator: solids with a specific gravity of 2 or greater, 98% down to 75 microns; manual or automatic purge
  • Maxi Flush Screen: down to 75 microns, 40 to 200 mesh cartridges, flows from 250 gpm, automatic backwash

Cooling Tower Basin Filtration FAQs

What is cooling tower basin filtration?

It removes suspended particles from water collected in the tower basin or circulating through the cooling system, helping manage sediment and debris that can accumulate or reach downstream equipment.

Side stream filtration treats a portion of the recirculating water continuously in a separate loop. Full-flow filtration treats the entire flow. The right approach depends on the equipment to be protected, the solids load, flow rate, and installation conditions.
Filtration removes particles that reach the filter intake. Heavy deposits already on the basin floor may need to be cleaned out first, and intake location affects capture. Yardney can review your basin layout and pump arrangement.
No single filter suits every tower. Separators remove heavy inorganic solids, screens handle algae, slime, and organics, and sand media captures fine organic and inorganic solids. Water testing and a system review determine the right choice, and some systems combine technologies.
No. Mechanical filtration removes suspended particles. Towers still need a water treatment program for dissolved minerals, corrosion, and microbiological growth.
