Steel Mill Water Filtration Systems

Keep spray headers, heat exchangers, and cooling circuits clear of solids.

Steel mill water filtration removes scale, solids, and particulate matter from the large volumes of cooling and process water mills use, so spray headers, heat exchangers, and cooling circuits stay protected.

Yardney RCW systems pair a pump and motor with sand media, centrifugal separator, or Maxi Flush filtration on one skid for recycled cooling and plant process water.

Why Steel Mills Need Water Filtration

Steel mills use large volumes of cooling and process water that often contain scale, solids, and other contaminants. These solids can plug nozzles and reduce heat transfer efficiency. Mill scale from descaling and spray cooling is a recognized cause of nozzle plugging in continuous casting and roll cooling circuits.

Removing particulate matter protects spray headers, heat exchangers, and critical cooling circuits, reduces downtime, and supports more predictable equipment performance in harsh, high-heat environments.

Benefits

Protect Spray Headers: Reduce the solids that plug nozzles.

Preserve Heat Transfer: Limit the particulate that reduces heat transfer efficiency.

Reduce Downtime: Fewer plugged nozzles and fouled circuits mean fewer interruptions.

Support Predictable Performance: Keep equipment running consistently in high-heat service.

Yardney RCW Systems for Steel Mill Cooling Water

Yardney RCW systems are skid-mounted, fully assembled filtration systems for recycled cooling tower and plant process water. Suspended solids in a cooling system significantly reduce heat transfer capability and increase plant operating costs.

RCW systems incorporate a sand media filter, centrifugal sand separator, Maxi Flush screen, or Filtaworx, chosen for your flow, solids, and installation conditions. Flows start at 10 gpm, and standard operating pressure is 80 psi, with high-pressure versions available. For plant recirculating loops and cooling tower side-stream loops, RCW sand media systems with standard media and interior epoxy coating suit water up to about 120 to 140°F.

Applications

  • Recycled cooling water and plant process water
  • Removal of sand, rock, grit, and other inorganic contaminants
  • Removal of algae, slime, and other organic contaminants
  • Protection of spray headers, heat exchangers, and cooling circuits
  • Flow from 10 gpm; 80 psi standard operating pressure

Standard Assembly Includes

  • Full assembly on a skid mount
  • Pump, motor, and motor starter
  • Inlet, outlet, and backwash manifolds
  • Grooved couplings on manifolds
  • Controller and solenoids
  • Electrical wire and tubing

Available Options

  • ASME code
  • High-pressure rating
  • PLC controller

Steel Mill Water Filtration Process

  • Cooling or process water is routed from the loop into the filtration system.
  • The selected technology captures or separates suspended solids and particulate matter.
  • Filtered water returns to the spray headers, heat exchangers, or cooling circuit.
  • Media and screen filters release captured solids by backwash, and separators release them through a purge.

Filtration removes suspended particulates. Corrosion, scale, and microbiological control need a separate water treatment program.

Filtration Technology Options

Centrifugal Sand Separator: heavy, coarse mill scale with a specific gravity of 2 or greater, 98% down to 75 microns, for scale pits and primary intake loops; standard units to 140°F, and 210°F and above with high-temperature gaskets and coatings; manual or automatic purge; flows from 4 gpm up to 7,800 gpm depending on the model

Maxi Flush Screen: fine and floating scale that escapes primary pits, down to 75 microns, for caster cooling and spray headers; standard to 140°F, and 180 to 200°F with special mesh and seals; 40 to 200 mesh cartridges, flows from 250 gpm, automatic backwash

Sand Media: organic and inorganic suspended solids down to 20 microns; backwash runs one tank at a time

Steel Mills Filtration FAQs

What is steel mill water filtration?

It removes scale, suspended solids, and other particulate matter from cooling and process water so spray headers, heat exchangers, and cooling circuits are protected.

Solids can plug nozzles and reduce heat transfer efficiency in heat exchangers and cooling circuits, which adds maintenance and downtime.

RCW systems build one filtration technology into a skid with a pump and motor. Sand media filters remove suspended solids down to 20 microns, separators handle heavy inorganic solids, and Maxi Flush screens filter down to 75 microns. Yardney can review your flow and solids.

Centrifugal separators remove inorganic solids with a specific gravity of 2 or greater, 98% down to 75 microns. They must be sized within their flow range for proper centrifugal action. Standard units handle water to 140°F, and high-temperature gaskets and coatings extend that for hotter circuits.

No. Filtration removes suspended solids. Corrosion, scale, and microbiological control still need a water treatment program.
