Pulp & Paper Water Filtration Systems

Keep sprays, heat exchangers, and process equipment clear of suspended solids.

Water filtration for pulp and paper mills removes suspended solids from process, cooling, wash-down, and reclaim water so sprays, heat exchangers, and other equipment keep running.

Yardney Maxi Flush screen filters and skid-mounted sand media systems provide automatic backwash filtration for mill water.

  • Maxi Flush screens from 250 gpm and up
  • Sand media systems from 10 gpm and up
  • Automatic backwash cleaning
  • Serving industry since 1965

Why Pulp and Paper Mills Need Filtration

Pulp and paper facilities manage fiber, fines, and solids in process and reuse streams. These solids can clog sprays, foul equipment, and disrupt production, especially in wash-down, cooling, and reclaim systems where water quality must stay consistent.

Mills also pre-filter raw water so it can serve as process and cooling water, and filtering cooling water reduces fouling. Removing suspended solids early supports cleaner process water, better equipment protection, and more stable operations.

Benefits

Protect Spray Systems: Reduce the solids that clog sprays and nozzles.

Reduce Equipment Fouling: Remove suspended solids before they foul equipment in process, cooling, and reclaim loops.

Support Cleaner Process Water: Keep water quality consistent across wash-down, cooling, and reclaim applications.

Reduce Unplanned Downtime: Fewer clogs and less fouling mean fewer interruptions to production.

Yardney Maxi Flush Screen Filters

Maxi Flush screen filters provide high-rate filtration with automatic backwash, started by elapsed time or pressure differential. The filter and cartridge have no internal moving parts to wear out.

A welded stainless steel wedgewire cartridge filters down to 200 mesh (75 microns), with cartridges from 40 to 200 mesh, at flows from 250 gpm and up. Maxi Flush is also the screen option in Yardney RCW systems.

Applications

  • Industrial process water and incoming plant water
  • Industrial water for plant reuse
  • Surface water with high algae and organic content
  • Wastewater clean-up
  • Removal of algae, slime, organics, sand, rock, and grit

Standard Assembly Includes

  • Filter element
  • Backwash valves
  • Inlet and outlet manifolds
  • Grooved couplings for connecting multiple housings

Mill Water Filtration Process

  • Process, cooling, or reclaim water is routed through the screen filter.
  • Suspended solids collect on the stainless steel wedgewire cartridge.
  • Backwash starts automatically on elapsed time or pressure differential.
  • Collected solids leave through the backwash outlet, and the filter returns to service.

Mechanical filtration removes suspended solids. Dissolved chemicals, mineral scale, and microbiological growth need separate treatment.

Filtration Technology Options

Maxi Flush Screen: down to 75 microns, 40 to 200 mesh cartridges, flows from 250 gpm, automatic backwash

Sand Media: organic and inorganic suspended solids down to 20 microns; backwash runs one tank at a time

RCW Recirculating Water: skid-mounted systems for recycled cooling tower and industrial process water; from 10 gpm, 80 psi standard

Pulp & Paper Filtration FAQs

What is water filtration used for in pulp and paper mills?

Mills filter raw, process, cooling, and reclaim water to remove suspended solids that clog sprays, foul equipment, and disrupt production. Which stage needs filtration depends on the water source and the equipment being protected.

It depends on the particles, flow, and stage. Maxi Flush screens filter down to 75 microns at 250 gpm and up, sand media filters remove suspended solids down to 20 microns, and RCW systems serve recirculating cooling water. Yardney can review your water data.

Maxi Flush filters start backwash automatically by elapsed time or pressure differential. Sand media backwash is also started by time or pressure differential, and one tank is cleaned at a time while the others keep processing water.

Yardney media and screen filters are used to prepare industrial water for plant reuse. The quality required depends on the process, so Yardney can help match the filter to your reuse target.

No. Mechanical filtration removes suspended solids. Dissolved chemicals, scale-forming minerals, and microbiological growth need separate treatment.
