Pharmaceutical Water Prefiltration Systems

Control particulates upstream to protect sensitive treatment stages.

Pharmaceutical water prefiltration removes suspended solids from feedwater and process streams before they reach membranes, UV, and other high-purity treatment stages.

Yardney multi media, deep bed, and sand media filters are skid-mounted prefilters rated down to 5, 15, and 20 microns.

  • Media filters down to 5 microns
  • Skid-mounted and fully assembled
  • Backwash cleaning
  • Serving industry since 1965

Why Pharmaceutical Water Needs Prefiltration

Pharmaceutical and other high-purity environments need strong control of particulates to protect process integrity and sensitive downstream treatment. Suspended solids can foul membranes, disrupt UV performance, and create quality variability.

Source water quality also changes with the seasons, and pretreatment is required ahead of reverse osmosis units. Removing solids upstream supports cleaner feedwater and process streams, and helps facilities keep operation stable and predictable.

Benefits

Protect Membranes: Keep solids off membranes, where they cause fouling and extra cleaning.

Support UV Performance: Remove solids that can disrupt ultraviolet treatment.

Reduce Quality Variability: Give downstream treatment a steadier stream to work with.

Support Stable Operation: Keep sensitive stages operating predictably as source water changes.

Yardney Multi Media Filters for Pharmaceutical Feedwater

Yardney Multi Media filters remove organic and inorganic suspended solids down to 5 microns, with reverse-stacked media for progressive filtration. They serve as pre-filtration ahead of granular activated carbon, reverse osmosis, cartridge or bag filtration, and deionized water.

Systems ship fully assembled on a skid, with a controller that starts backwash automatically on elapsed time or pressure differential. Performance can be modified for a given particle size range, so the filter can be matched to the stage that follows.

Applications

  • Pre-filtration ahead of reverse osmosis, UV, and membrane systems
  • Removal of organic and inorganic suspended solids down to 5 microns (Multi Media)
  • Pre-filtration ahead of carbon, cartridge or bag filtration, and deionized water
  • Incoming plant water and feedwater conditioning
  • Stand-alone use or in conjunction with other filtration technologies

Standard Assembly Includes (media systems)

  • Full assembly on a skid mount
  • Tanks and backwash valves
  • Inlet, outlet, and backwash manifolds
  • Controller, solenoids, electrical wire, and tubing
  • Removable underdrain

Pharmaceutical Prefiltration Process

  • Source or incoming water enters the media filter before any sensitive treatment stage.
  • Suspended solids are trapped as water moves through the reverse-stacked bed.
  • Prefiltered water continues to carbon, reverse osmosis, ion exchange, UV, or membrane treatment.
  • Backwash releases the captured solids on elapsed time or pressure differential.

Prefilters remove suspended solids. They do not purify water, and validation and quality requirements are met by the full treatment train and your quality program.

Pharmaceutical Filtration FAQs

What is pharmaceutical water prefiltration?

It removes suspended solids from feedwater and process streams before membranes, UV, and other high-purity treatment so those stages are not overloaded.

Suspended solids can foul membranes, disrupt UV performance, and create variability. Pretreatment is required ahead of reverse osmosis units, and feedwater quality can change with the seasons.

It depends on the stage that follows. Multi Media filters remove suspended solids down to 5 microns, Deep Bed down to 15, and Sand Media down to 20. Yardney can review your water and treatment train.

No. Yardney media filters are prefilters that remove suspended solids. Purified water comes from the downstream treatment, and validation sits with that system and your quality program.

Yes. Yardney lists granular activated carbon, reverse osmosis, cartridge or bag filtration, and deionized water as downstream stages for its media prefiltration.
